TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
To be an educator of the arts is to serve the greater good and to be a part of something that is bigger than ourselves. My role as a teacher is more than simply teaching dancer’s how to move with proper technique, but to inspire them to reach their own personal goals, to craft confident leaders within the field and to help each student discover their own unique voice within a community of passionate individuals as well as in the world outside of dance. I believe that no matter what future goals and aspirations a dancer may have, each dancer is valuable, important and can contribute something meaningful to the field. Everything a dancer possesses can be shared with the rest of the world and has the potential to bring so much good to the world as a whole. As a dance educator, my main goal is to share the passion I have found for dance with all of my students and to help each one develop their own passion and personal relationship with this art form.
I believe that ballet is an art form that must be honored and respected therefore the correct execution of movement is necessary for a teacher to instill in their dancers. I will train dancers to have a strong foundation of classical ballet technique that can be translated into other styles such as jazz, modern, etc. and which will prepare them for the professional workforce. I have an eclectic background that includes a mix of Vaganova, Balanchine, and Cechetti styles. This eclectic syllabus will give students knowledge and skills within many different styles and will prepare them for whatever may come their way in future endeavors in the dance field. I believe that technique is crucial to the success of a dancer with professional goals and this will also help them channel their artistry and expression. I create a positive environment in which students are encouraged to work diligently within their own physicality and skillsets as well as challenge themselves by always working towards being the best dancer they can be. I often use tactile teaching when it is appropriate and at the discretion of the student in order to help them mentally and physically carry out concepts such as turn out, anatomical alignment and placement according to their own bodies. My use of anatomical and muscular terminology will help students to be kinesthetically aware which will help improve their technique as well as help them avoid injury. I place a large emphasis on musicality and the use of personal nuance which can help dancers stand out from the crowd and make their dancing more interesting to watch.
Although technique is important in showing honor to the art form, there is nothing more crucial to this art form than artistry. I am a firm believer in the idea that without heart and soul, it is impossible for a dancer to truly enjoy what they are doing and reap the many benefits that dancing provides. That being said, I work to foster an environment where artistry can come alive and dancers can explore their own personal inward connection to movement. Each dancer has individual strengths and talents so I aim to create a space for dancers to recognize those strengths and constantly build on them. I believe in giving constructive criticism to dancers with the intention of seeing them succeed and excel. I also believe in encouraging students with compassion and giving praise/positive feedback as this will build the confidence of each dancer and create an environment where dancers can realize their potential and work to embrace it. I believe in showing each dancer respect and contributing one hundred percent of my time, energy and effort into the betterment of not only themselves as dancers but first as human beings and citizens of society.
Dance is a form of communication through movement that can be used to speak to and touch the lives of anyone who watches it. This is why I believe that dance plays an integral role in the lives of individuals within society who many not be able to personally relate to dance and the arts as much as it is a personal experience for the dancer. I aim to create dancers who can be advocates for the significance of dance and how much it can improve the lives of everyone who experiences it. Dancers have an important job in keeping the arts alive and valued in society and one of my goals as a teacher is to empower my students to advocate for the need for arts in everyday life and society.
